Phu Quoc gears up with mega projects for APEC 2027

(NLDO) - A total of 21 major projects linked to APEC 2027 are being expedited to meet operational deadlines.

In early April, construction of facilities for APEC 2027 is accelerating, with the summit scheduled to be hosted by Vietnam in November 2027.

A representative of Sun Group told Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper that the APEC Convention and Exhibition Center in Phu Quoc is about 90% structurally complete after roughly 10 months of construction since June 2025.

The project has a total floor area of 157,375 square meters, with four above-ground levels and one basement.

Notably, the exhibition hall features a column-free ballroom with an 81-meter clear span and a floor area of 11,050 square meters, exceeding the current world's largest ballroom at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas (10,220 square meters).

The multi-purpose theater has completed about 80% of its reinforced concrete structure, with installation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems now underway, a key step toward completion.

The project's exterior is scheduled for completion in October, with full delivery targeted for early 2027, in time for APEC 2027.

In parallel, construction of the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project, spanning 1,050 hectares, is being accelerated across several key components.

The second runway has reached 58% completion of its M150/25 cement concrete layer, while work on the higher-grade M350/45 layer has begun. At Terminal 2 (T2), structural works are about 85% complete.

Once operational, the airport's capacity is expected to rise to 20 million passengers per year from 2027, with a second-phase expansion targeting 50 million annually.

The VIP terminal, designated for heads of state and senior officials, has completed 100% of its structural framework, with roof works at 60%, exceeding the investor's initial timeline.

Sun Group said it has partnered with Aedas Interiors, part of Aedas, and HOK to design interiors for Terminal 2 and the VIP terminal to top-tier international standards.

The provincial road project DT975, linking Phu Quoc International Airport to the APEC convention complex in Phu Quoc, has reached about 15% completion after more than three months of construction.

The investor aims to complete 80% of earthworks and auxiliary structures before the rainy season, allowing focus to shift to road base and asphalt paving works, with a target completion date of April 30, 2027. The route spans 17.7 km, with a planned right-of-way of 62 meters, 10 traffic lanes, and a reserved corridor for a parallel rail line.

The construction units working on projects serving APEC 2027 are facing significant pressure and challenges, particularly due to weather variability and tight completion deadlines

A total of 21 major projects associated with APEC 2027 are being expedited to meet operational deadlines. These developments mark a pivotal step in upgrading Phu Quoc’s urban infrastructure and enhancing the island’s appeal for investment, tourism, and real estate growth.

According to a Sun Group representative, the projects are under significant pressure from tight schedules and weather constraints, with only 9-15 months left to complete key works. Phu Quoc is expected to enter a prolonged rainy season from May to October, leaving contractors with just about two months of dry conditions to accelerate construction before adverse weather sets in.
