The megaprojects reshaping Can Gio

(NLDO) - Can Gio is entering a new phase of development driven by an unprecedented wave of large-scale infrastructure projects.

A series of interregional and international infrastructure networks is taking shape - from the Ben Thanh - Can Gio high-speed railway, the Can Gio Bridge and the Can Gio - Vung Tau sea-crossing route to Long Thanh International Airport - making travel to Can Gio from every direction more convenient than ever before.

Over the past year, Can Gio has entered what is arguably the most dynamic development phase in its history, driven by an unprecedented wave of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Most recently, in late April 2026, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee granted an investment policy approval for the Can Gio International Transshipment Port project to a consortium comprising Saigon Port JSC and Terminal Investment Limited Holding S.A., a subsidiary of MSC - the world's largest container shipping group.

The project is classified as a special-grade maritime infrastructure development, with total investment capital estimated at VND128 trillion (nearly US$5 billion). In its first phase, the project will feature a port system stretching roughly 7 kilometers across an area of 571 hectares.

Strategically located along a major international shipping route, the Can Gio International Transshipment Port is designed to handle up to 16.9 million TEUs annually. The project is expected to become a critical gateway helping Vietnam deepen its integration into global logistics networks and international supply chains.

Meanwhile, construction of the Ben Thanh-Can Gio high-speed railway officially began in December 2025. Once completed in the fourth quarter of 2028, the line is expected to cut travel time from downtown Ho Chi Minh City to just 13 minutes.

The Can Gio Bridge is also moving forward and is expected to be completed by 2029, ending decades of reliance on ferry crossings. Once operational, it will reduce travel time between downtown Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio from more than two hours to just around 40-50 minutes.

At the same time, Ho Chi Minh City has approved the investment policy for the Can Gio-Vung Tau sea-crossing route, paving the way for a direct connection between two major southern growth hubs with a travel time of just 10 minutes.

Together with major logistics and seaport developments, these large-scale projects - backed by investments worth hundreds of trillions of dong - are expected to create a multidirectional, multimodal infrastructure network, ending Can Gio's long-standing "island-like" isolation and transforming the district into a strategic gateway linking Ho Chi Minh City with the Southeast region.

At the center of this emerging network is the Vinhomes Green Paradise Can Gio coastal mega-urban development, envisioned as the catalyst for a new tourism and economic hub in southern Ho Chi Minh City.

Launched by Vingroup in April 2025, the project features a series of internationally standardized developments and is expected to meet growing demand for integrated, multi-experience destinations. The mega-urban area is also anticipated to become a key growth engine helping Can Gio achieve its target of attracting 40 million tourists annually.
