Sun Group launches resort-focused airline Sun PhuQuoc Airways

Duong Ngoc - Hoang Phuong

(NLĐO) - If all goes smoothly, ticket sales are expected to open by the end of October 2025, with the first commercial flight taking off shortly thereafter.

On June 13, the Ministry of Construction officially granted an air transport business license to Sun PhuQuoc Airways.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways, developed by Vietnamese conglomerate Sun Group, is a resort-focused airline with a total investment of VND 2,500 billion.

Branded as Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA), the carrier aims to operate under a premium resort airline model, blending traditional services with charter flight operations, with Phu Quoc Island at the heart of its network.

From the island known as the “Pearl island", SPA plans to connect to major domestic cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, while expanding internationally to destinations in Japan, South Korea, and China.

Right from its name, Sun PhuQuoc Airways clearly conveys its mission: to bring travelers closer to Phu Quoc — a destination ranked by Travel & Leisure as the second most beautiful island in the world, after the Maldives.

At the same time, the airline aims to connect Phu Quoc with the world through a “hub-and-spoke” flight network model, with the Pearl Island as its central hub.

A Sun Group representative stated that the period from March to December 2025 will serve as the airline's investment preparation phase, during which it will finalize staffing, technical systems, and legal procedures.

If all goes smoothly, ticket sales are expected to open by the end of October 2025, with the first commercial flight taking off shortly thereafter.

In its initial phase, the airline will operate narrow-body aircraft including the Airbus A320, A321, and notably the A321neo—a fuel-efficient model capable of flying over 7,000 kilometers nonstop, making it ideal for medium-haul international routes. At the same time, the carrier is also in talks with Boeing to further expand its fleet.

With its operations base located at Van Don International Airport in Quang Ninh province, SPA is expected to not only ease air traffic congestion but also serve as an “aerial gateway” ahead of major global events—most notably the APEC 2027 Summit, which is slated to take place in Phu Quoc.

The launch of Sun PhuQuoc Airways comes as Vietnam's aviation sector undergoes restructuring in the post-pandemic era, positioning itself to capture a new wave of high-end travelers seeking personalized experiences.

As part of Sun Group’s expansive ecosystem on the island, SPA will serve as a key connector—linking passengers to a network of luxury hotels, resorts, entertainment complexes, fine dining, and large-scale shows, delivering a seamless travel experience from sky to shore.
