The 2025 United Nations Vesak Day affirms Vietnam’s Remarkable achievements

(NLĐO) - The United Nations Vesak Day celebration this year vividly demonstrated Vietnam’s spirit of unity, wisdom, and responsibility.

It highlighted Vietnam's commitment to the global Buddhist community.

On May 8, the closing ceremony of the 2025 United Nations Vesak Day was held at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City.

Attending the closing ceremony were Member of the Politburo and Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh, and Member of the Politburo and Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Van Nen.

Also present were Central Party Committee members Mai Van Chinh, Deputy Prime Minister, and Dao Ngoc Dung, Minister of Ethnic and Religious Affairs.

The ceremony was attended by representatives and Buddhist leaders from more than 80 countries and territories.

In his closing remarks, Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council, affirmed that the 20th United Nations Vesak Day celebration was a resounding success.

On behalf of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, Most Venerable Thich Thanh Nhieu expressed gratitude to all delegates from over 80 countries and territories who came to Vietnam, particularly Ho Chi Minh City, to participate in this sacred event.

According to Most Venerable Phra Brahmapundit, Chairman of the International Council for the Day of Vesak (ICDV), this year’s United Nations Vesak Day clearly reflected Vietnam’s spirit of unity, wisdom Compos, and responsibility toward the global Buddhist community. Through this event, the image of the lotus, Vietnam’s national flower and a symbol of purity in Buddhism, was spread far and wide.

"With the light of the Dharma, with the spirit of compassion and wisdom, we join hands to build a future where people can live in harmony with one another and with nature, regardless of race, belief, nationality, or ethnicity," said Most Venerable Phra Brahmapundit.

The ICDV Chairman extended heartfelt thanks to the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, revered monks, distinguished delegates, and volunteers who contributed to the success of the United Nations Vesak Day in Vietnam.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Member of the Politburo and Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh emphasized that the success of the United Nations Vesak Day was a powerful testament to the humanistic values and great achievements of Vietnam and its people.

It affirmed the Vietnamese nation’s tradition of peace, compassion, virtue, and love for harmony; it validated the Party’s correct policy on freedom of belief and religion, as well as its effective implementation in practice.

Furthermore, it demonstrated tangible results in improving the material and spiritual lives of the people, evidenced by the participation of millions of individuals in the Vesak events with joy, trust, reverence, and order.

Particularly noteworthy, according to Mr. Nguyen Hoa Binh, was the affirmation of Vietnam’s international stature, prestige, and proactive responsibility in addressing global issues.

At the closing ceremony, the Organizing Committee of the United Nations Vesak Day announced the 2025 United Nations Vesak Day Joint Declaration.

This declaration is Buddhism’s response to the world’s urgent challenges, grounded in the principles of non-violence, tolerance, and respect for human dignity.

According to the joint declaration, the delegates attending Vesak reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to applying Buddhist wisdom, ethical responsibility, and collective action to promote world peace, protect human dignity, and sustain planetary well-being.

The delegates called on all nations to prioritize policies promoting peace, environmental sustainability, and economic equity over military escalation and excessive exploitation of natural resources.

They urged global organizations to apply Buddhist ethical principles in governance, diplomacy, and sustainable development.

They called for international organizations to recognize Buddhist wisdom as an essential resource in conflict resolution and global ethics.

The international Buddhist community was encouraged to engage in collaborative efforts to shape ethical leadership, economic fairness, and environmental healing.
