Hanoi breaks ground on landmark Opera House by West Lake

Nguyễn Hưởng - Hoàng Phương

(NLĐO) - The Hanoi Opera House project, nearly six times the size of a football field, is expected to host world-class artistic performances, cultural events.

On October 5, the Hanoi People's Committee, in collaboration with Sun Group, officially broke ground on the Hanoi Opera House and Thematic Cultural and Art Park project at Dam Tri Lake, Quang An Peninsula (Tay Ho District, Hanoi).

The project is a key component among the major works celebrating the 71st anniversary of Hanoi's Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2025).

Covering an area of 19.1 hectares with a total investment of VND 12.756 trillion, the Hanoi Opera House is one of the largest cultural and artistic projects to be developed entirely with private funding from Sun Group.

The entire process of design, construction, and operation will be closely managed and supervised by the Hanoi People's Committee.

Delegates pressed the button to officially launch the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hanoi Opera House project.

With a total floor area of approximately 40,980 square meters (excluding parking and technical spaces) — nearly six times the size of a standard 11-a-side football field — the Opera House will feature two main auditoriums: an opera hall with 1,797 seats and a multipurpose hall equipped with mobile seating that can be rearranged to accommodate standing events such as live music shows and concerts, with a capacity of 1,430 standing and 216 balcony seats.

In addition to the two main halls, the Opera House will include various multifunctional spaces such as a grand foyer, rehearsal rooms, and a museum.

The venue will not only serve as a stage for diverse art forms — from symphony concerts, Broadway-style musicals, opera, and classical ballet to award ceremonies, galas, and large-scale entertainment shows — but also as a major hub for cultural exchange and leisure activities for Hanoi residents.

The Opera House's most distinctive feature lies in its unprecedented domed architecture, inspired by pearls emerging from the surface of West Lake. The structure features an ultra-thin yet highly durable shell, coated with a pearlescent material designed to reflect the shifting colors of West Lake throughout the day.

Aiming to host world-class artistic performances and attract renowned artists from around the globe, the Hanoi Opera House aspires to join the ranks of the world's most celebrated cultural landmarks — alongside those in Paris, Milan, Berlin, London, New York, and Los Angeles.

The Hanoi Opera House is designed by Renzo Piano, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. The first Italian to be named among Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World," Piano has received numerous prestigious awards over his six-decade career, including the Pritzker Prize — often regarded as the Nobel Prize of architecture.

The Hanoi Opera House is scheduled for completion in 2027.
